noyze interview up@ MUEN magazine
Interview by Jeanne Thomas
MUEN: How did you all meet up, and how long have you been together?
NOYZE: Don Lynch and Kyle Menges had been together for about 7 or 8 years going through numerous singers, bass players and drummers trying to find the right combination of "noyze".I was introduced to them in march of 2006 by Tammy Payne who had posted an ad for them on the web.
I had been out of music for about 10 years and wanted to get back at it. .They had 13 songs and really have a great guitar sound and work real well together ,no volume wars here. The fact that they refused to play covers also appealed to me. We then went through 2 more singers and 2 more bass players over a 4 month stretch. I convinced them we needed to record the material and worry about other players later. After the songs were in the can I told them about Joe Decelle who I had worked with a few years earlier in the band "market field" here in phoenix. He came over to my studio to check out the tunes and was hooked, I burned him a copy and he immediately went to work writing. Noyze has been together for a little over a year now.
The band is Joe Decelle on lead vocals & bass guitar, Kyle Menges on lead guitar ,Don Lynch on rhythm guitar and Dave Durham on drums.
MUEN: What else can you tell us about the band, and how would you describe the music scene in your area?
NOYZE: Noyze is the most laid back band you could ever hope to be in. We can write songs at will, its amazing how easy the songs come together. As far as the music scene in phoenix there are a lot of great bands and talent here.Phoenix also has produced some great bands from the past Alice Cooper, The Tubes ,Gin Blossoms, Flotsam and Jetsom to name a few. We are working on doing some shows with Tone Cast another band from Phoenix that is on some of the bigger net radio shows we're on.
MUEN: Your songs have great lyrics - who writes the songs and what is the inspiration behind them?
NOYZE: Joe Decelle writes all of our lyrics, usually myself ,Don and Kyle come up with the music and present them to Joe who then writes to the feel of the music. When we did the first cd all the tracks were finished, he wrote to existing music and did an excellent job, I might add. .The guy is just amazing and he and I have a great deal of respect for each others talents .Don and Kyle provide an awesome guitar sound to work off also.
The new cd "further in" went real well as far as recording goes and by last August 8th more songs were in the can .I called Joe on a Tuesday and told him I was going to Dons and that we were going to write 3 more songs for him,. I'm sure he was thinking yea right sure you are. .By the next Tuesday the rhythm tracks were done,. those songs are "no way home", "in coming" and "darkest hour" Even Joe was amazed at how quick they came together.
MUEN: Are you looking for a label or are you happy as an indie band?
NOYZE: We formed our own label "TAN BANANA RECORDS INC." in hopes we would get picked up for distribution and retain at least part of our song rights. The indie band scene is really starting to take off, now we are heard all over the world not just by our families, friends and local following like it was just a few years back.
Don't get me wrong we are open to all offers it takes big money to go national and that is our ultimate goal.
MUEN: Do you have any endorsements and/or do you use any equipment exclusively?
NOYZE: We currently have no endorsement deals, but would consider all offers, we do use some equipment exclusively but we aren't plugging them just yet lol.
MUEN: What was it like opening for L.A. Guns at the Whisky A Go Go?
NOYZE: It was awesome that was our first gig as a band and we also released our fist cd "NOYZE VOL.1" there.
To play on the same stage as "THE DOORS", "ZEP" ,"VAN HALEN", just to name a few was a real kick in the ass to say the least. That's hallowed ground there at the Whisky. On the trip over to LA we had a blow-out on one of the trucks, it took us an hour to get the spare tire down to change it ,but nothing was going to stop us from that gig .I had a 29 inch tympany drum in the back of my truck and usually people think its a webber grille, we were getting gas in Indio and this dude walks up and is checking it out, it turned out he played tympany for the LA symphony, way cool.
MUEN: Have you gotten any radio play? what stations can we request you on?
NOYZE: Right now we are getting played on over 50 internet radio stations. The biggest being BROADCASTASYLUM.COM with over 500,000 listeners, Doc and Jade have been big supporters of NOYZE for almost a year now, also a big shout out to Ashley& Dora the producers of the show.
Radiogetswild.com in the UK is doing a great job for us as well, we received a gold music award from them being chosen from over 20000 submissions in 2007 to finsh in the top 8 for the year.
Big shout outs to the Scott and Pam show, Cygnus radio,k45rocks,new music radio, wflm dark cloud., indielive .net, awesome radio.com .indieliferadio and all the stations in the NOYZE network.
MUEN: I see you sponsor NHRA events, whats the reason behind that.
NOYZE: We need to correct that one, we sponsor a stock eliminator car in the NHRA.
The car is a 1970 SS Camaro with a 396 big block. It is driven by Andrew Durham, the 2006 west coast junior dragster champion .After moving up to the big cars in 2007 he had set the national record in his class, and had one divisional win to his credit within the first 3 months of the season, He went on to finish 4th in the points in the nhra pacific division and was up for rookie of the year.
As for the reason, the NHRA is the rock & roll racing series that fits our demographic and anytime you can get your logo on a car that pulls the front wheels 4 ft off the ground in front of 80,000 people has to be good band exposure.
MUEN: Do some of you really wrestle emus?
NOYZE: Don Lynch the rhythm guitar player has a 5 acre farm sw of phoenix where we rehearse. Its like a rescue for wayward animals that he nurses back to health ,he is amazing with them. He has 3-emus,3-lamas,a Hereford bull,2-donkeys,a horse, ducks, chickens ,geese, sheep, dogs and cats ,he found one of the emus running loose in a field and brought it home. A few weeks back one of the emus escaped during practice and we had to stop and round it up. It tried to rake Don with its Raptor like claws, he ended up carrying it back to its pen with a sock over its head.
That was probably the first time in recorded history that a band rehearsal was interrupted by an emu.
MUEN: Where can people find your merchandise online?
NOYZE: Right now we are up @ I Tunes ,Ruckus, PayPlay ,E-Music, Rhapsody ,Napster, and most all the sites for downloads
We are selling the cd @ CD BABY all of these links are posted @ http://www.noyze.net ,and http://www.myspace.com/phoenixnoyze and we are selling downloads through snocap at both of the noyze sites. We are in the process of building a merchandise page at the noyze.net site. We have shirts ,hats stickers and bumper stickers that will be available soon. Also Don wants to start a shoe line and call em Dons Cons but we'll have to wait on that for now, maybe one of those endorsement deals will come through lol.
MUEN: Will you be kicking off a tour anytime soon with the release of "FURTHER IN"
NOYZE: We have nothing definite yet, but are open to all options .We have been in the studio for much of the bands existence and are now focusing on the promotional and gigging part of the equation. We are hooking up with some of the bands we are friends with such as TONE CAST a great band based here in phoenix and THE CAUZE another great band based in SO CAL to do some gigs in the very near future. We should have the dates up soon at our websites.
MUEN: Is there anything else you'd like to add?
NOYZE: Noyze would like to thank Nella our 1 fan for all her help and for hooking us up with you guys at MUEN her website for abandoned children can be found here http://www.myspace.com/Tina_os
and many thanks go out to MUEN for having us.
