StandbY Location: Glasgow, Scotland
StandbY formed out of necessity. The four members, (then excluding current drummer) were studying HND music and audio technology, at Stow College in Glasgow, Scotland. A band had to be started for a project involving self promotion.
So, StandbY was born. At the time there wasnt much original material to perform, so while Bobby started writing some tunes, the band concentrated on covers, Even Flow (pearl jam) Everlong (foo fighters), Mystify (inxs) amongst others.
Bobby then came ialong with what would prove to be a wealth of material, in a relatively short space of time, songs like Hell or High, Another Day, Insecure, Leaving for Something More and more went straight into the setlist leaving no room for covers anymore. These rough tunes grew into well defined songs, with a clear sound developing, this sound was one similar to bands such as Coldplay, Travis and Turin Brakes..the project they had started the band for became only a sideline, and the band itself became the priority. An EP was released through GetMeMusic.com shortly after.
BUT! weeks away from the bands first gig disaster struck, and an argument about commitment, time keeping, effort etc blew up and the band fell apart at the seems, ego's came into play and the band looked destined never to be in the soom room as each other again.
Bobby (guitarist and songwriter) and Gerry (vox) stuck together, and a new drummer was brought in, Will Welch, a longtime school friend of Gerry's. Bobby decided to give his younger brother a shot on bass.....after one rehearsal Bobby's brother Sean broke his foot and was unable to rehearse for months...this was a time of great frustration..underlined by Seans admission that he was uninterested in the band and its direction, he left and joined a local metal outfit called "Messiah Torn"
Something had to be done. By this time Bobby had started writing again and a huge change in direction was around the corner, Bobby's music to date had not been a reflection of his rock influences and his writing style was changing to suit this.
After being blown away by some of Bobbys new "spacey Rock" tunes, the band got back together and after some discussion invited Mark back into the band, Mark was the original drummer, buthe is also a hell of a bass player (and a saxophonist as it happens) and the rest as the say is history!
The band now enjoy playing their music more than ever, and are starting to turn a few heads through the many websites they are featured on....
The next chapters are not yet written, but with real world promotion offers on the table from kaleidoscope records and gigs around the corner once again, the future looks bright for this band of Scottish rockers. |
